HEART MOOC

AVATAR INCORPORATION:

Avatars were included in the course so students could feel more connected to their instructors, and to help close the gap of interaction they may not get through an online program. Avatars were rotated in different combinations throughout the course to ensure each instructor was incorporated evenly. They also were placed as a call to action to let students know it was time to answer a Reflection Prompt.

COLOR APPLICATION:

The course site's primary color

(Used for buttons, Rise 360 tool accents, text accents etc.)

Introduces units and sub-units

Used to call to attention for/when a task needs to be completed by the student

Used to indicate there is information to digest, or action items to complete before moving on to the next unit

INTERACTIVE ELEMENTS:

The platform's features were utilized to allow students an interactive learning experience. Interactive elements were used to call attention to terms students need to know, and test their understanding on the terms.

Accordion style list that requires viewers to interact in order to unveil the contents

Flip cards to help test knowledge and highlight specific terms

Drag and drop element to test knowledge of previous terms

Feedback and conclusions:

This course has not yet been launched to mooc.org, but here is initial feedback I have received as well as conclusions:

Faculty and staff were extremely excited about introducing a more engaging way to present their content to their online students.

They were most excited about the incorporation of the course contributors/ instructors as avatars, and how they are included in the course site.

From this feedback, after the first round of students testing the course, moving forward I would want to focus on how to further integrate the avatars into the experience, as well as the images, graphics, and icons.
